Energy from the deserts: Desertec & Solar City 2050

Desertec, an acronym for Desert Technology, is the first realistic and commercial large scale sustainable energy supply project in the World. Realistic and commercial, since a cooperation of companies joined under the Desertec Industrial Initiative (DII) – including companies such as RWE and Deutsche Bank – recently announced the investment of 400 billion Euro in the project until 2050. Large scale, since it will provide in over 15% of the European energy supply by 2050. Sustainable, since it will combine concentrated solar power plants in Southern Europe, the Middle East, and Northern Africa (MENA), with PV installations, wind energy, hydro-energy, and biofuel-installations in the more Northern regions in Europe; all connected through an extensive HVDC electricity grid.

Learn all about this grand plan for a sustainable future in our next meeting, on Desertec and the award winning Solar City 2050 – a step even beyond Desertec, including the potential to create entire sustainable, economically thriving cities in the MENA region (and therefore not only using Desertec for European gains) – and discuss (or philosophize) along on the possibilities it creates and the need for Dutch companies to participate.

As always there is also the opportunity to share a quick bite together beforehand, to get to know some of the guests already before the meeting. Join us at 17.45 at the meeting point at Central Station, from where we will walk to a place to have dinner at 18.00. If you are a little bit late, coming from Utrecht, or just can’t find us, you can call Pepijn van Kesteren at 06-13281935 to ask for directions.
